Purring is not a cat's way of saying it's happy. That's just their way of feeding. They only eat the stuff we give them from cans and give to them as treats as a front, to make them seem like normal animals. They know we enjoy the sound of purring and it's feel, so they know it will draw us closer to them so that they can continue to quietly absorb our life energies and one day claim Earth as their own.
